Best in Beauty 2020: Haircare

Well, 2020 is finally over, and along with a brand new year brings a time for reflection. In true beauty blogger style, I’m recapping my best in beauty, and today’s post is all about my best haircare 2020 picks.

As a professional hairstylist and hair extensions specialist by trade, I’m motivated to keep learning more and educating others when it comes to their haircare choices, so I’m pretty excited to share with you my top haircare picks for 2020! (Even if I did use up a few mentioned products and accidentally tossed the bottles in the recycling before shooting for this blog post. Oops!)

Best Purple Shampoo for Blonde Hair

Fudge Clean Blonde Damage Rewind Purple Shampoo

One of my favourite haircare topics and services to perform on clients is blonding. As a blondie myself, I understand the importance of a good purple shampoo and exactly what kind of difference it can make to blonde hair. I am forever dumbfounded by new clients that have no idea about the benefits of using purple shampoo on their blonde hair, so I’m making it my mission to spread the word! If you’re one of those people, give this post a read to become acquainted with how purple shampoo works, what it can do for your hair, and which product is perfect for you: What Is the Best Purple Shampoo for Blonde Hair?

It’s probably obvious by now why I love Fudge Clean Blonde Damage Rewind so much as I’ve raved about it none stop. But, in case you’re new here, let’s recap…

This was one of the most effective toning shampoo’s for blonde hair that I tried in 2020 and I think it’s fair to say I tried quite a few.

With a combination of potent violet pigments, coupled with Optiplex technology, it isn’t only brilliant at neutralizing brassiness and yellow tones in blonde hair, but also a great restorative option that strengthens hair by 90 percent. It is also sulfate-free, so cleanses the hair gently without stripping it of its natural oils that contribute to keeping your hair hydrated and healthy, making it perfect for use with hair extensions, too.

I started using this because I was super worried about how fragile my hair had become since bleaching it. My ends were quite dry and I suffered a ‘chemical haircut’, where bleach had fried my hair so badly around my hairline that it started to break off. But Fudge Clean Blonde has been my (not-so) secret weapon this past year and has worked wonders at supporting my hair in its healing process and making it so much stronger!

Its toning power is also great at annihilating those yellow pigments that can start building up in blonde hair. I would leave it in my hair like a mask for around 10 minutes once a week to give me more of an icy, silver-tone to my hair.

After every wash, I’m greeted with smooth, glossy, strong, fresh-looking blonde hair. What’s not to love?!

Best Hairbrush for Wet Hair

Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler Hairbrush

If you read my recent blog post, 11 Haircare Mistakes that are Damaging Your Hair, you’ll know that I recommended this hairbrush in place of those horrid little ball-tipped ones.

You’ll also know that brushing your hair when wet should be approached with caution since it is at its most vulnerable and leaves it prone to damage.

The Tangle Teezer Wet Detangling Brush is the only one I have ever used that I would declare as safe to use on wet hair. I use it both on myself and on my clients!

I love something that detangles and smoothes my hair easily after washing, but I just don’t always have the patience for a tooth comb. But the soft, flexible bristles on this brush glide through wet hair and gently detangle it without damage or pain.

Oh, how amazing this would have been during our childhoods, when Mom’s were known for detaching our scalps from our skulls every time they brushed our hair for us, haha!!

Best Hair Oil

The L’oreal Extraordinary Oil has been a necessity for over 4 years now and I love it just as much as I did when I first tried it.

Firstly: the price. Retailing at around £10 (I use the one for all hair types as there are variations of this product and the prices are different) and lasting about a year with almost daily use, this is by far one of the best haircare products I’ve used in terms of value for money. Somehow, just one and a half pumps are all I ever need.

Its oil-in-serum type texture is so lightweight and, as someone with very fine hair, it yields incredible results without being greasy or heavy in the slightest.

It’s also super versatile and can be used on both wet or dry hair, too: On wet hair after washing to smooth and detangle; on dry hair, in between washes, to help combat frizziness, add moisture, and really polish your final hair look, making it incredibly sleek and shiny; and on both to protect from temperatures of up to 220 degrees when blowdrying and heat styling. That’s what you call a triple threat!

Best Hair Mask

Bleach London Reincarnation Mask

Back when I was at uni, I was a stickler for changing my haircolour every few weeks and it very quickly became dried out and damaged.

At the time, the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer was considered a ‘hero product’ among the haircare community, and I adored it for adding moisture and movement back into my dry hair.

As amazing as it was for my hair, I was getting through around £30 worth of product every month or so… until I discovered the Bleach London Reincarnation Mask, that is.

This nourishing hair mask treatment costs just a fraction of Philip Kingley’s and I think it’s a pretty great dupe, too. I’ve repurchased it ever since for the past 5 years.

Both contain a combination of plant extracts, oils, and proteins that help to increase elasticity, reduce breakage, hydrate dry hair, and smooth unruly, frizzy locks.

Best Conditioner for Dry Hair

Pureology Hydrate Conditioner

Conditioner is my least favourite product within my haircare routine as I feel like they all pretty much do the same thing for my hair and I find them a little, well… boring – regardless of price. That may be a pretty ballsy statement for a pro hairstylist to make, but I also rarely purchase the accompanying conditioner for any shampoo I use.

Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware of the importance of conditioner. Closing the cuticle, restoring hair’s PH and adding smoothness to the hair is essential after it becomes unbalanced from shampooing, and I never cut corners when it comes to caring for the hair, whether it’s a clients or my own. However, the results of surface conditioners are very temporary, and I find weekly penetrating conditioners and masks, such as the Bleach London Reincarnation mask, much more helpful at helping to repair and restore the hair long term, rather than just coating it with silicones to give a synthetic shine.

On that note, the Pureology Hydrate Conditioner is one of very few that I’ve genuinely enjoyed using this past year, and that really doesn’t happen very often.

I’ve loved everything from the fresh, invigorating scent, how it’s super lightweight and nourishing, making my hair smooth and manageable without weighing it down, and the healthy radiance it gives to my hair, rather than a silicone-ladened slick of synthetic ingredients that give a fake, plastic-like shine.

Best Silk Scrunchies

Flower Hair Silk Scrunchy

2019 saw the reign of the Invisibobble, but 2020 took us back to the 90’s with one of the best fashion trends of the era: silk scrunchies.

I didn’t invest in silk scrunchies because they look cool, though. These on-trend accessories actually have major hair health benefits.

The naturally slippery texture of silk means silk scrunchies glide off the hair without pulling or snagging, and reduce friction caused by movement and tight updo’s, especially when taking them out.

These Flower Hair Silk Scrunchies are just one of a few brands that I tried out in 2020, and I love their quality and beautiful colour range.

What were your favourite haircare products for 2020? Do you like any of the ones I’ve mentioned?
